After 250 years under Russian rule, the Ukrainians had been fed up with the extremities of rules and regulations enforced by the Russians. Through retaliation, the Ukrainians decided to fight back, to gain their country’s independence. However, after a devastating three year civil war which lasted from 1917-1920, the Ukraine lost miserably, leaving the Russians in charge. Four years after the war was over, Ukraine had been newly controlled under a new regime by a man named Joseph Stalin. Although this plans for office led several remembered events, the most memorable should be the Ukrainian Genocide, which lasted from 1932-1933. Its main purpose was to deprive the Ukrainians of their basic essential needs and belittle their pride. During the peak of the starvation process, the Ukrainians began to eat things no human would. They began to devour rats, dogs, and other domestic animals as if they were their favorite meals. Their famine had become so severe, that they resorted to cannibalism. Mothers were putting their children into large cooking pots and boil them to perfection; all for their own survival!
